You can lay the foundation for becoming a well-paid writer when starting your freelancer career.
To receive $25 or $50 per article, you should actually be worth this kind of money. Fill in any gaps you have in your knowledge of English grammar and spelling. Read blogs by writers you admire – you can learn a lot from their choice of words. Write every day, even if it is just some simple gigs. Read books and blogs that contain writing tips. Take a writing class from a trusted mentor.
Determine what value you can offer your clients. What are your main advantages – creativity, speed, or profound knowledge in particular areas? Next, think about who is likely to take an interest in what you are offering – magazines, blogs, or business clients. Plan out the ways in which you are going to contact them and offer your services.
To earn more as a freelance writer you need to constantly search for opportunities. Pitch to every magazine you would like to write for, with your story idea. Offer guest posts to blogs you love, and study company websites. If you see ways in which the text on their landing page could be improved, to sell more, contact the company with your polished version.
There are websites where you simply can’t get any well-paying gigs. Customers who come there are prepared to pay the lowest price, and have lots of freelancers competing for their order. Most freelance websites and content mills belong to this category. Look for blogger job boards that are known to pay premium prices for good writing and offer users a good online writing job.
Every time a person who has heard about you (from a satisfied client, for example) fails to find you online, you lose money. If you aren’t already active on social media, it is time to create a page and start posting regularly. Set up your own blog or website, and write guest posts for popular blogs.
All of the above will be of no use, if you don’t dare to charge for what your writing actually costs! Realize that good writing has its price and, now that you have developed your skills, you are worth more. Don’t be afraid that you will scare clients away. You are better off getting one well-paying customer, than five customers who would have you work day and night for pennies.
