Freelance writing is a way to make secondary income—not primary income. You will not make enough, say, to support yourself and especially not yourself and a family, but if you work hard and do perfect work every time, you will eventually build up a list of clientele that will call on you for repeat jobs and you will be able to make a little income on the side.
You just have to decide how busy you want to be. Also, you must be careful not to over apply for jobs. You do not want to apply for scads of jobs only to get hired for them and then have to cancel them all, which will take up your “job cancelled rate” and make you less attractive and definitely less hirable to clients of all kinds.
The last thing a client wants is a writer without a perfect command of English, English grammar, and, especially, English punctuation skills. So, if your command of English is not perfect, you will want to improve your knowledge of English before you ever start. Start searching out ESL sites on the web and try to work with them every day, even after you begin freelancing. Slow and steady wins the race, always, when it comes to mastering English.
Now, about English grammar and punctuation. No one wants a freelance writier putting commas, dashes, and semicolons in the wrong place nor do they want someone who misspells words or does not know what a complete sentence is versus an incomplete sentence.
You will want to study up on all aspects of English grammar. Try finding good university writing center websites. Look for interactive exercises on English, English grammar, English punctuation, and English sentence structure. What is helpful about these exercises is that they will not only tell you when you are right, they will also tell you why you are wrong.
Most clients use the Associated Press style for citing of sources and you should study their style guide stringently so that you can brush up on how this style differs from other styles. Some sites even insist upon your taking a test in Associated Press style before they will hire you at all.
