10 Essential Rules of Getting Freelance Writing Jobs Online

If you are considering a job in freelance writing, there are many things you should know before you dive in. Below are 10 essential rules for getting jobs online:

  1. Use a third party site that protects you and the client. Do not try and start out on your own with no backup or support.
  2. If you are new, look specifically for sites or for jobs that are for new freelancers. You will have to take poorly paying jobs at first, but after one or two you will be well on your way to success.
  3. Have a portfolio no matter how small. If you don’t have examples now, write some for yourself and upload them.
  4. Complete your profile. Potential clients want to see a thorough profile and not something that says “great writer—available all the time” with no photo or information.
  5. Communicate well. Write and act professionally.
  6. On that note, try and find professional and polite ways to say things. Yes, there are times when you land a job and the client disappears for days on end, but that is no reason to send an email that simply says “when do I get my money?” Be polite and professional about it.
  7. Be flexible in the things that you cover. Just because you enjoy writing on travel does not mean you should not bid on jobs for gift buying guides or for a short eBook. If you have the research skills, go for more topics and you will create a better reputation.
  8. Review the profile of a client before you bid on their job. See if they like to pay for quality work or if they often hire the foreign writer at a cheap rate. You can cater your bid by either bidding for a lower amount or only bidding on jobs where the client is interested in quality.
  9. Be confident. Tell the client why you are the best person for the job.
  10. Save yourself time and create a general bid that you can cater to all of your bids. If you are bidding on dozens of jobs per week or per day, it can be incredibly time consuming. You can save yourself a great deal of time by having a generic paragraph about your skills, qualifications, etc… and then add to that paragraph for each job as necessary.
